Remember the long, lazy days of summer when you were a kid? For me, they looked like playing outside, fighting with my brother over week-long Monopoly games, and getting a giant stack of books from the library. Calgary Public Library’s free Ultimate Summer Challenge is inviting both you and your kids to enjoy the long, lazy days of summer with a good book and free programs! The Challenge is back to keep the whole family entertained and engaged all summer long.
The Ultimate Summer Challenge is the Library’s popular summer program, giving the whole family an incentive to keep reading and learning over the summer. For the second year, the Challenge is also offered to adults, so anyone can get in on the fun. Read aloud together, discover a new graphic novel, and listen to audiobooks on your vacation; everything counts! Registration is already open for the Challenge and you can track your reading from July 1 – August 31, 2023.
How to Sign Up
The Ultimate Summer Challenge is free and you can register anytime throughout the summer with your free Library card, available online or in any of the 21 Calgary Public Library locations. Once you register in Beanstack, you are entered to win fabulous prizes. You can track your reading on the app to earn badges and you can also collect a paper map at your local Library to colour in every day you read. There are two different maps, one for kids (ages 0 – 12) and one for teens and adults.
Be sure to stop by the Library throughout the summer and check out the wide variety of free programs available, too. Learn about art or science or attend a storytime for all ages. Play a game on a hot afternoon when you pick up some new books — there is a lot to do at the Library! When you visit, the kids can bring their maps back to the Library and receive a sticker for reading every seven days. At the end of summer, everyone can bring their completed map (or challenge on Beanstack) to the Library to receive a special prize.
There will be three grand prize draws throughout the summer — be sure to register right away, so you don’t miss out! Each age group has their own set of unique prizes. The littlest ones could win KiwiCrate subscriptions, Zoo Engage memberships, or a Sky Castle Indoor Playground Party Fun Day. Prizes for kids ages 6 – 12 include TELUS Spark Family Passes, a KiwiCrate subscription, Zoo Engage memberships, board game prize packs, an OwlCrate Jr. Book subscription, or an iPad. And teens and adults will be excited for a chance to win an OwlCrate Book subscription, a KiwiCrate subscription, a board game prize pack, an iFly Indoor Skydiving Family and Friends Pack, a Raven Reads Book subscription, AirPods Pro, or an iPad!

The Ultimate Summer Challenge is perfect for the littlest one who still likes to chew the books you read to them, the middle-schooler who is passionate about graphic novels, or the teen who decides they don’t read anymore.
