Last summer my family and I went for a bike ride along the Bow River near Prince’s Island Park and Eau Claire Market. We knew there were some not-to-be-missed events happening and we wanted to experience them for ourselves. We started our evening sampling delectable delights at Taste of Calgary, then were mesmerized watching the the luminescent orbs of the River of Light art display along the Bow river while listening to a K’naan singing at the main stage on Prince’s Island Park. The night ended with a bang of fireworks celebrating Chinatown’s 100th year. It was surreal and my husband and I were reminded why we love Calgary so much that evening.
During the summer in Calgary, it seems each weekend is crammed with festivals featuring hundreds of local and international artists, great outdoor events and tons of family-friendly fun. There are festivals celebrating just about everything and there is sure to be some that suit your tastes:
If you like the eclectic, street festivals like Fourth Street Lilac Festival or the Calgary Fringe Festival might be right up your alley.
If you are a music lover be sure to check out Calgary’s Folk Festival, Reggae Festival and the Calgary International Blues Festival.
To celebrate the diverse cultures represented in Calgary check out Expo Latino, Afrikadey, the Greek Festival or the Turkish Festival.
If you are foodie you can’t miss Taste of Calgary or BBQ on the Bow. Global Fest is Calgary’s most explosive festival, featuring an international fireworks competition.
Most of the festivals we list are child friendly and have something special just for the kids but The Calgary International Children’s Festival is produced especially for children and kicks off the long line up of Calgary Festivals on May 25th.
That’s really just the tip of the iceberg though, visit Family Fun Calgary’s Festival page to see all or Calgary’s upcoming festivals. Do keep in mind that not all content at all festivals is appropriate for children!
