The Head Snuggler

Is it is more challenging to be a parent now or when our parents were raising us?

I have only one child and a very modern husband who helps with the cooking, diapers, bedtime and even some of the cleaning. Yet there are still days when I feel at my wits end despite all his help. I shake my head in bewilderment at how my mom did it raising four kids in a home with very traditional roles. My mom did everything and I mean everything! When mom occasionally went away for the weekend on a much needed break, we were stoked because that meant we got to eat out every night - my dad literally did not know how to turn on the stove.

Maybe it is more challenging to raise kids now because our generation has much higher expectations of parents? When we were growing up, birthday parties meant running around in someone's yard and having cake and ice cream but today kid's birthday parties get more and more elaborate with each parent upping the ante to make their kid's birthday party the best.

When I was a kid, registered programs and summer camps were few and far between and only happened once we were quite a bit older. Now, there is everything from Gymboree to Kindermusic. I have a friend who had her 18 month old registered in 4 different programs.

When we were kids, discipline meant a tongue lashing and good solid swat on the bum. Today, parents are far more concerned with what the long term effects their discipline will have on their child's self-esteem and self-worth.

Maybe this is a question that cannot be answered, but there is one thing that today’s parents can be grateful for; the abundance of gadgets available now that did not exist in our parents' time. From the Bumbo seat to wheeled high chairs with reclining seats, to remote control mobiles, there is a gadget out there to make your life as a parent easier.

We were recently introduced to one such item; the Head Snuggler.

The ladies of Family Fun Calgary had the pleasure of going houseboating with our families on the Shuswap last week. All three kids got to test drive the Head Snuggler on the 5 hour trip there and back.

The Head Snuggler is designed to support your child's head while they sleep so they don't droop their head forward and cause strain on their necks. It can be used on a car seat or an umbrella stroller.

I have to admit when I saw it I was pretty skeptical and figured I would have to wait until my three year old was asleep before I could slip it over his head. I put it on his car seat so he could take a look at it and immediately realized that I was wrong. He absolutely loved it. He pulled it over his head and cozied right into it. He loved how he could pull it down and block out light, noise and just pass out for the long car ride. Both my husband and I kept looking back in amazement how content our finicky little boy was in his Head Snuggler. My husband said it was genius. It will definitely be a permanent addition on our car seat for those long drives.

This Calgary mom's invention also has kudos from a pediatrician and a chiropractor. For more information, visit the Head Snuggler Website.
