It’s time to create, inspire, and take learning beyond the classroom! The APEGA Science Olympics will help students succeed and thrive in our fast-paced, technological world. This is an interactive, interschool, science-packed event where students in grades 1-12 can pursue their passions and be fully engaged in their learning. It’s an opportunity to put creativity and science knowledge to the test by turning everyday objects into engineering marvels and geoscience wonders.

What is It?

Unlike a science fair, where students develop and test a hypothesis, the APEGA Science Olympics presents participants with a series of problem-solving challenges that show the fun side of engineering and geoscience and how they impact our everyday lives. The challenges are related to the Alberta school curriculum and have been developed by workgroups of APEGA professional engineers and professional geoscientists and local teachers. Students will have to use innovative ideas to develop creative solutions to the challenges.

The Challenges

How do we lift large amounts of sand or water? What goes into designing an amusement park ride? What tools can we use to rescue someone lost in the wilderness? These are real challenges tackled by former participants. Communication, teamwork, creative thinking, and problem-solving skills are the fantastic natural outcomes of these projects. The challenges for 2024 will be released to participants on February 12, 2024.

There is more than one way to solve a problem! Participants ask questions, dive into research, and tap into their imagination before they plan, create, test, and improve.

Projects are scored and measured against thresholds to determine final rankings, which may result in multiple participants receiving gold, silver, bronze, or participant acknowledgement. All teams receive feedback on their projects and get guidance from professional engineers and geoscientists.
